The Department of Physics was founded in the early days of Stony Brook
when the campus was temporarily located at Oyster Bay. The
Department
of Astronomy was founded together with Geology as the Department of
Earth
and Space Sciences. In 1998 the Astronomy Department separated
from
Geology and joined with Physics to become the Department of Physics and
Astronomy.
