2000

On Friday April 7, 2000, the 22nd annual Sigma Pi Sigma induction ceremony honored six new inductees from the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

The new members of SPS are:
  • Kristine G. Coleman (back row, left)
  • Julian S. Brody (back row, middle)
  • Raffaele Buffolino (back row, right)
  • Jaspreet K. Grewal (front row, left)
  • Susan Metz (front row, middle)

  • Elizabeth A. Ditchek (front row, right)
Prof. Harold Metcalf and Undergraduate Secretary Elaine Larsen presided at the ceremony. Prof. Robert DeZafra gave the congratulatory speech.  This was a memorable occasion because it marked the official retirement of Prof. DeZafra, one of the founding members of the Department.  Prof. Dezafra recounted his career, especially the early days at Stony Brook and the various crossroads which arose and eventually led to his current involvement in the physics of the atmosphere and detection of rare pollutant species which alter the chemistry of the upper atmosphere.
