Leonard
received a B.S. degree from Union College in 1935 and a PhD. from Princeton
in 1940. He spent a year at the Institute for Advanced Study. Leonard
joined the Stony Brook faculty in 1958. He was already famous because
of his work with his thesis mentor, Eugene Wigner. He served as chair
of the department of physics for several years in the 1970's. After
retirement he lived first near Brandeis University, later moving to Sarasota,
Florida and then to Haverford, Pennsylvania. He died there on November
30, 2004. Ruth Jean his wife, died in September 2004. We remember
Leonard as a wise advisor and extremely warm human being, who did much
to shape the department during its formative years
