Born
in Hungary, Nandor Balazs received a MSc degree from the University of
Budapest in 1948 and a PhD from the University of Amsterdam in 1951.
He then spent two years as assistant to Schroedinger at the Dublin Institute
of Advanced Study, one year as assistant to Einstein at the Institute for
Advanced Study in Princeton, and was Associate Professor of Physics at
the University of Alabama during the years 1953-56. He subsequently
held research positions at the American Optical Company, the Enrico Fermi
Institute of the University of Chicago, and Princeton University.
In 1961 he came to Stony Brook. He refers to his 35 years on the
faculty at Stony Brook as "a learning experience." He became Emeritus
Professor in 1996, and remains active in physics. Among his
many honors, he is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
