Di Tian
Di Tian had nearly completed his thesis research when he was tragically
killed on February 9, 1992, while driving home late on a snowy night.
His research on surface physics with Prof. Franco Jona (Dept. of Materials
Science) had been going very well. Prof. Jona assembled Di's research
papers into the form of a thesis and presented to work to the Graduate
School. The Dept. of Physics held a normal thesis defense, with Prof.
Jona standing in place of the candidate. The Dept. of Physics awarded
Di the degree of PhD posthumously. The article below was published
in the newsletter of the Graduate Student Organization.
