Nano for nano: fabrication for x-ray characterization
Chris Jacobsen, Dept. Physics & Astronomy

Fresnel zone plates are diffractive optics where the width of the
finest circular ring determines the spatial resolution of a focused
probe.  We describe zone plate optics fabricated using a JEOL
JBX-9300FS electron beam lithography system which have a finest
ring width of 30 nm and height of 120 nm.  These optics are then
used to produce a focused soft x-ray beam through which micrometer
thick organic specimens can be scanned.  This allows one to study
nanoscale heterogeneities in biology, environmental science, and
materials science.
