2. Mark Sowul found an interesting web page about the history
of blood pressure measurement. This page is maintained by the
Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering of University College
London (UCL) It is interesting to notice how many incremental improvements
in technique and in understanding occurred up to now in what seems to a
modern physics student like an elementary measurement. It illustrates
several things -- that vast opportunities exist to apply physics to biology
and medicine; even such a simple thing as blood pressure may lead to many
years of development and many partial solutions; the present technique
is not likely to be the last in the evolution. Dr. John Hui's visit
on February 9, 2004 introduced us to this topic.
