Homework Assignment # 11, Due (in class) Monday April 26
Reading Assignment: Krane, Chapter 12 Problem Assignment:

1.
Krane, Chapter 12, p.407, #3.
2.
Krane, Chapter 12, p.407, #4.
3.
Krane, Chapter 12, p.407, #5. Rutherford's experiment showed that the nucleus is very small and has charge +Ze, but it showed nothing else. To learn the size of the nucleus and its internal structure it is necessary to do scattering experiments which probe deeper and disagree with the Rutherford formula. Figure 12.2 is an example. From the information on the figure and eq. 6.13 you can find the impact parameter b. Equation 6.21 is equivalent to

\begin{displaymath}
1=\left(\frac{b}{r_{\rm min}}\right)^2 +2\tan(\theta/2)
\left(\frac{b}{r_{\rm min}}\right).\end{displaymath}

Use this formula to find $r_{\rm min}$.
