Absorb (or Memorize) the important information on figures 8.3 and 8.4 of Krane's book. You don't need to know the value of Z for Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, but you should know the names and ordering of the alkali metals and the inert gases. In other words, you should be able to recite the mantras ``lithium sodium potassium rubidium and cesium'' and ``helium neon argon krypton xenon and radon'' - invent a good tune if you can. You don't need to know the precise values of atomic radius and ionization energy, but you should know trends and approximate values.
