Physics 131 spring 2006
Midterm 1
Midterm 2
Final exam

The first Midterm exam was held on Friday Feb. 24, 2006

Notes and  formula sheets were not allowed.
You were encouraged to memorize a few formulas.

For practice, here are exams from the previous two years.
practice exam, from fall 2004;  fall 2005
answers to this exam (fall 2004) (fall 2005)

Note: problem 3b from Fall 2004 is slightly off from my point of view.  The force which a car has to overcome in normal driving is wind and engine resistance, not kinetic friction between the tires and the road.  The friction between tires and road is more like static friction, or to  be more technical, rolling friction as discussed on p. 178 of Young and Freedman (I skipped this topic and will not put rolling friction on an exam.)

The style of exams for Spring 2006 will be slightly different.  I will not likely use a problem like #2 from fall 2005 which is primarily symbol manipulation, elementary calculus, etc.  And I would certainly like to test two things that Prof. Deshpande wasn't testing: getting information from graphs, and using knowledge from the labs.

Here is the Spring 2006 midterm exam #1 with answers.

The second Midterm exam will be on Friday March 31, 2006 (8:30-9:25 am in Harriman 137).
Although the exam will focus on Chapters 8-13, you are encouraged NOT to forget Chapters 1-7.

Notes and formula sheets will not be allowed.  You should memorize all important definitions and a few key formulas.  There is a new formula sheet which is a supplement to the previous one.
